GEHRIG HITS HOMERUN WITH PORTRAIT OF STYLISH YOUNG WOMAN IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

Joseph W. Gehrig “hits one out of the park” with this cabinet card portrait of a fashionable and attractive woman in Chicago, Illinois. She looks magnificent with her white fur draped around her neck and her black feather hat. The subject of this photograph is clearly a woman of means.

  1. Do you know if Gehrig had branch studios in, say, Milwaukee. I have photos by Gehrig Studio that I can date to 1881, but the subjects were living in Waukesha Village, Wisconsin, at the time.

    Thanks, Geoff

    • I can’t find evidenc that Gehrig operated a studio in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. However, my unsuccessful search does not preclude the possibility that Gehrig did have a studio there. An alternative explanation is that the Milwaukee residents in your photograph had been visiting nearby Chicago and had stopped into Gehrig’s studio to have their portrait taken.

      • I think you might be right. It seems that travel from Milwaukee to Chicago was fairly common in those days – indeed, my own great-grandfather moved back and forth between Wisconsin and Illinois. The son of one of the subjects later went from Australia to Chicago to study dentistry.

        Geoff
