Meet Walter Burnham, who is posing for his portrait at the studio of Langley, in Manchester, New Hampshire. The studio was located at  780 Elm Street. Burnham has movie star looks and an interesting mustache which curls upward at each end. This cabinet card portrait has gold beveled edges and is in fair condition (see scans).

This wonderful vintage real photo postcard (Postcard 1) captures actor Mr. Charles Garry and actress Dora Barton (1880-1966) in a dramatic scene from the play “Ivanhoe”. Ivanhoe was a dramatization by William Palmer of Walter Scott’s novel.Dora Barton plays Rebecca while Charles Garry plays the role of Isaac of York. Both actors later had film careers. This photograph does an incredible job of capturing the performers emotions. The photographer of this image was well known for his talent and family ties. Alexander Percy Guttenberg (1870-?) came from a family that produced a number of photographers. His father, Marcus Guttenberg (1828-1891) began as a daguerreotypist in Hungary, Prussia, Poland and Germany before starting a photography business in England (1851). One source reports that he established 24 studios in England but settled in the Manchester area. Percy, like his father, was also very successful. In fact, there are fourteen of his photographs in England’s National Portrait Gallery. Percy was famous for his work photographing actors and actresses. The image above was photographed at his Queen’s Theater studio in Manchester as part of a “Revival Series”. The postcard has been mailed and is postmarked in Sunderland in the year 1909. Sunderland is in the northeast of England.

Postcard 2 features a portrait of Dora Barton. Barton, an English actress, appeared in films between 1916 and 1938. Her mother and her sister were also actresses. The IMDb reports that Barton appeared in 12 films. She also appeared in a Broadway show in 1902. This postcard was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (No.1654C). Barton’s photo portrait was done by Alexander Bassano. Bassano (1829 –1913) was a leading royal and high society photographer in Victorian London. The postcard has a 1904 postmark.  (SOLD)

FRANCES WETHERALL : FILM AND STAGE ACTRESS : AS CYNISCA IN PYGMALION & GALATIA

This vintage real photo postcard features English actress, Frances Wetherall (1868-1923). She appeared in films and on stage. Her filmography includes three films; “A Place in the Sun” (1916), “Nobody’s Child” (1919), and “Cinderella” (1921). She was married to film actor, H. R. Hignett. Wetherall acted in the play, “Gamblers All”, with Lewis Waller. Between 1894 and 1895, Wetherall was a member of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company. She continued to perform in musical and legitimate theater the rest of her life. This postcard portrait was taken at the Guttenberg Studio, in Manchester, England. The phtograher captured Miss Wetherall in her role as Cynisca in”Pygmalion and Galatia”. The photographer of this photograph is Percy Guttenberg of Manchester, England. This cabinet card portrait features a bust view of a pretty young woman. The photograph was taken by Stephen Piper. He operated a studio in Manchester, New Hampshire. Stephen Piper (1835-1903) was a photographer in Manchester from 1866 to at least, 1887. He was born in Sanborton, New Hampshire. His obituary in the Manchester Union Leader nearly filled the entire front page of the newspaper. Even more remarkable for the time, was the fact that his picture was also on the front page. Piper was clearly considered an important citizen of Manchester, at the time of his death. (Sold)

This carte de visite portrait features a close up view of an attractive serious young woman. She is wearing earrings as well as a pin. Her hair is short and frizzy. This young lady was photographed by S. Piper. His photo studio was located at 905 Elm Street in the city of Manchester, New Hampshire. Stephen Piper (1835-1903) was a photographer in Manchester from 1866 to at least, 1887. He was born in Sanborton, New Hampshire. His obituary in the Manchester Union Leader nearly filled the entire front page of the newspaper. Even more remarkable for the time, was the fact that his picture was also on the front page. A MAN AND HIS BEARD IN MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE

This cabinet card features a well dressed gentleman with neatly combed hair and a wiry gray beard. The photographer of the image is W. R. Call and his studio was located in Manchester, New Hampshire.  Whiting Rexford Call (1839- ?) finished public school and became in succession, a school teacher, grocery clerk, and photographer. He opened his photography studio  in 1867 and it was still operating forty years later. The 1882 Manchester Directory listed the studio’s address as 895 Elm Street. A CHORUS LINE OF ADORABLE LITTLE GIRLS PERFORM IN MANCHESTER, ENGLAND

This vintage real photo postcard captures a “chorus line” of little girls during dance class. Perhaps they are performing in a recital. These costumed dance students are simply adorable. This photograph was taken by R. S. Parker. He operated a studio in Manchester, England. Some of his photographs are held by England’s National Archives, as well as by the Manchester Archives. During my research, I was able to find three of his photographs online. All the images were taken in schools. Perhaps, Parker’s niche was school photography. This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY WOMAN IN THE BLACK (MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE)

This cabinet card portrait features a bust portrait of an attractive woman taken at the Langley studio in Manchester, New Hampshire. The photographer used a dark background effectively to produce a beautiful image. The subject is wearing a pretty dress and a collar pin. The photographer of this image is Josiah T. Langley (1856-1916). Langley was married to Kate Langley (1869-?) in 1891 and the couple had two female children. The girls are listed in the 1910 census as being twelve years old. The siblings, Florence and Grace, were probably twins. A published interview with his daughter reveals that Langley was a pioneer in photographing snowflakes. PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG COUPLE IN LEEDS, ENGLAND

A young well dressed couple pose for their portrait at the Allen Nield studio in England. The woman in this photograph appears to be only semi conscious but she is probably just at a loss as to how to pose for the camera. Nied had four studios at the time that this photograph was taken. There were two galleries in Leeds, and one each in Manchester and Stockport.

FOUR AFFECTIONATE WOMEN IN MANCHESTER, IOWA

Four women wearing lovely dark dresses, pose for their portrait at the Walter studio in Manchester, Iowa. The ladies are a bit “touchy-feely” as they assume an affectionate pose. The photographer of this photograph is Harvey L. Walter. “The History of Delaware County, Iowa” (1878) and Langdon Road Photographer Directory both mention Mr. Walter. He was born in 1833 in Ohio and moved “west” in 1853. He married Mary Fuller in 1864 and moved to Manchester in 1871. At one point he was partners in a firm in Manchester called Walter & Weidman. They were active in the 1870’s and 1880’s. Their studio was located on Franklin Street and was above Ford Brothers Store.
