I’M YOUR CAPTAIN, I’M YOUR CAPTAIN, NAVAL OFFICER IN PORTSMOUTH, GREAT BRITAIN

A naval captain sits for his portrait at the studio of W. V. Amey in Portsmouth, Great Britain. I am uncertain about his rank. Perhaps a visitor to this page can provide helpful information to determine his rank and country of origin. Portsmouth was a significant naval port for centuries, including at the time of this photograph. The photographer advertises that his studio was patronized by the late Majesty Queen Victoria which confirms that the photograph was taken after 1901; the year of her death. This portrait cabinet card is in good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A SAILOR FROM THE U.S.S. BOSTON IN NAGASAKI, JAPAN (1896)

This cabinet card portrait features a uniformed sailor from the navy ship, the U.S.S. Boston. The photograph was taken by Kiosheikwan of Nagasaki, Japan. The sailor probably had the photograph taken in order to send it to family or a girlfriend back home in the United States. A web site dedicated to the U.S.S. Boston and the men who served on her, was very helpful in providing details about the ship and the dates it served in the Pacific. The site reveals that there has been seven ships named  “Boston” that served America since 1776. The ship that the sailor in the photograph served on was a Protected Cruiser that sailed between 1887 and 1940. She was the U.S. Navy’s second steel ship and was propelled by sails and/or steam engine. The ship’s crew consisted of about 284 men. Initially. the ship patrolled the waters of Latin America and Haiti, but in 1892, she began to serve in the Pacific. In 1896, she was attached to the Asiatic Station at Yokohama, Japan. When the Spanish American War occurred in 1898,the U.S.S. Boston took part in the Battle of Manila Bay as well as, the capture of Manila. Reviewing the history of the ship, it seems probable that this photograph was taken in 1896 or 1897.  (SOLD)

AN OFFICER AND HIS FAMILY POSE FOR THEIR PORTRAIT IN A NO-FRILLS CARRIAGE

OFFICER 2

This unusual cabinet card captures an officer and his family posing for their portrait as they sit in a no frills carriage. The officer is joined in the photograph by two young women and a baby. He is supporting the baby with his right hand to keep her balanced as she stands on the floorboards. Presumably, one of these ladies is his wife but his relationship to the second woman is unclear. The subjects of this photograph are unidentified. The name of the photographer and the setting of this image are also unknown.  Perhaps a cabinet card gallery visitor can identify the nationality of the officer by looking at his uniform. Please leave a comment if you know his nationality. I believe this cabinet card is unusual because I have seen very few cabinet card images that feature close-up views of individuals sitting in carriages. More standard are photographs of carriages, coaches, and their occupants taken at a long distance.    (SOLD)

FRENCH SOLDIERS & THEIR ANTIQUE AUTOMOBILE: 2 WEEKS BEFORE THE BATTLE OF FRANCE

This vintage snapshot features four French soldiers and an antique car. I believe the car is a Citroen, but, I wouldn’t bet on it. The soldiers appear to be enjoying themselves. An inscription on the reverse of the photo reveals that the image was taken on 4/24/40. One suspects that these men had little idea that in just over two weeks from that date, they and their country would be under vicious attack. The Battle of France began on 5/10/40 and it soon became the “Fall of France”.  (SOLD)

This vintage photograph features a photo of a Russian soldier standing in front of a flag that has an image with the likeness of Vladimir Lenin (1870-1924). Lenin was the founder of the Russian Communist Party and the leader of the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. He was also the first head of the Soviet Union (1917-1924). His supporters viewed him as a defender of the working class from the wealthy and aristocraciy. His critics decried his totalitarian dictatorship and the mass killing and political repression that occurred under his stewardship. The unconfirmed translation of the words on this flag are”Glory to the Soviet Army”.This image is from circa the 1970’s. This photograph measures about 3.75″ x 5″ and is in good condition (see scans).
