A KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR (CABINET CARD)

This cabinet card features a knight in shining armor. You can be sure that he did not ride up to the studio on his trusty steed. I wish I could report that this photograph’s subject was Sir Galahad, Richard the Lionhearted, or even one of the Three Musketeers. Unfortunately, the timing is a “little off”. Instead, the knight seen in this photograph is probably an actor. His armor is quite impressive. Note his gloves (gauntlets) and the hilt of his sword. His helmet is also interesting. He is wearing the helmet with the visor in the up position. This is a beautiful photograph and that is not surprising because it was taken by Emilie Bieber’s photo studio. Emilie Bieber (1810-1884) had two studios in Germany: Berlin and Hamburg. She operated the Hamburg studio 1852 through 1872, when she was joined by her nephew, Leonard Berlin-Bieber. Emilie Bieber died in 1884. This photograph was taken in 1906, after Emilie Bieber had died. The 1906 date of the photo is apparent by the fact that “1906” is embossed on the lower right hand corner of the image. That same date is stamped on the reverse of the cabinet card. This photograph is mounted on very thick cardstock. There is a “fault line” on the reverse of the image. It is barely visible in the scan. Due to the fact that the cardstock is thick, the “fault line” is only a cosmetic issue. The photo is in good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY WOMAN IN HAMBURG, GERMANY (1919)

The well-dressed woman seen in this vintage real photo postcard portrait is pretty and also appears quite poised. She is wearing a couple of rings on her left hand as well as a wristwatch. Printing on the reverse of the postcard indicates that the photographer was Heinrich Haas and his studio was in Hamburg, Germany. The date of this photograph is 1919 according to writing on the message portion of the postcard.

TWO ADORABLE CHILDREN IN TRADITIONAL GERMAN COSTUMES IN HAMBURG

This wonderful Carte de Visite features two adorable children wearing traditional clothing posing for their portrait at the Banque & Kindermann studio in Hamburg, Germany. The boys outfit has an abundance of buttons and he is wearing a top hat. The little girl is holding a basket of pretty flowers and is wearing a hat that resembles a “frying pan”. On each side of the children are potted plants. The image is actually a lovely photograph. The reverse of the photograph has print that advertises the fact that the studio won medals at an 1887 exhibition in Stuttgart, Germany. This photograph was likely taken shortly after that contest. “The Photographic Times” (1897) tells the story of photographer Conrad Kindermann. He was born in Lubeck, Germany in 1842. He apprenticed in a cloth house in Riza, Russia for five years and worked there another year. He then was introduced to working as a photographer by his brother who had a studio in Hamburg. In 1863 he opened a studio in Lubeck. The ceilings in this studio were so low that they prohibited photographing adults when they were standing. The resourceful Kindermann decided to specialize in photographing children. It is very interesting to note that the word “kinder” means “children”. He was truly a Kindermann. In 1869 he met photographer Herr Benque. They becamse fast friends and were soon partners in a studio in Hamburg. The studio encountered financial problems so Benque left and soon the studio became very successful and Kindermann became known as one of the best photographers of children in the country. A review of the era’s photography journals demonstrate that he was often cited or the subject of articles. Another fascinating fact is that Darwin used three of Kindermann’s photographs in his book “The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals” (1872).

A GENTLEMAN WITH “MUTTON CHOPS” IN HAMBURG, GERMANY (PHOTO BY EMILIE BIEBER)

This carte de visite photograph is by celebrated photographer Emilie Bieber. She was a very successful and talented female photographer. Female photographers were uncommon in the cdv era. Bieber is definitely one of my favorite photographers. You may view additional photographs by Miss Bieber by typing her name in the cabinet card gallery’s search box. Bieber had two locations in Germany; Berlin and Hamburg. She ran her Hamburg studio from 1852 through 1872 when she was joined by her nephew, Leonard Berlin-Bieber. Emilie Bieber died in 1884. This cdv portrait features a well dressed gentleman with wonderful mutton chops. He is not wearing an accompanying mustache. Printing on the reverse of the carte de visite brags about the medals won by this studio. Awards were earned from exhibitions in Berlin (1865), Hamburg (1868), Paris (1870), Vienna (1873), as well as other photography competitions. This record of photographic honors informs us that this cdv was produced in 1873 or shortly afterward.

Emilie Bieber is one of my favorite photographers of the Cartes de Visite/Cabinet Card era. The quality of her work soars above her contemporary photographers. This CDV captures a lovely immaculately dressed couple posing in Bieber’s Hamburg studio. The woman’s hair is beautifully done. She is wearing a cross on a chain. The gentleman is wearing formal clothes and also is wearing a ring and pocket watch. Bieber had a second photo studio which was located in Berlin. Emilie Bieber ran her Hamburg studio for 1852 through 1872 when she was joied by her nephew, Leonard Berlin-Bieber. She died in 1884. This cdv likely dates back to the 1870’s. The reverse of the photograph lists prizes garnered by Bieber at various photo exhibitions including Berlin (1865), Paris (1870), London (1872), and Vienna (1873).   SOLD

CUTE GIRL HOLDING A BEAUTIFUL DOLL IN HAMBURG, GERMANY

A cute little girl holds her doll as she stands on an ornate chair in the studio of photographer Gustav Habel in Hamburg, Germany. Note the wonderful detail in the doll’s appearance. In addition, examine the carved animal heads at the end of the arm rests of the chair.The girl is wearing a great hat and dressy high boots. No biographical information could be found about Gustav Habel and the girl in the image is unidentified.

BEAUTIFUL GERMAN WOMAN WEARING LACE MANTILLA

This exceptionally clear cabinet card features an extremely beautiful woman wearing a lace mantilla. What’s a mantilla? According to Wikepedia, a mantilla is a lace or silk veil or shawl worn over the head and shoulder. Mantillas became popular in Spain toward the end of the sixteenth century. The photographer is Emilie Bieber and she had studios in Berlin and Hamburg, Germany.  Could E. Bieber, be related to Canadian singer and songwriter, Justin Bieber? Afterall, Justin Bieber’s great grandfather was from Germany. Forget it! Lets not go there! Lets get back to the cabinet card. Emilie Bieber was a female German photographer who was later joined in business by her nephew Leonard Berlin-Bieber. PORTRAIT OF VERY ATTRACTIVE FAMILY IN HAMBURG, GERMANY

A very attractive family poses for their portrait at the photographic studio of Theodore Reimers in Hamburg, Germany. Both the parents and the children have wonderful smiles captured by the photographer.

BEAUTIFUL AND FLAMBOYANT GERMAN WOMAN: BOUDOIR CARD PHOTOGRAPH

A very pretty and flamboyantly dressed woman poses for her photograph at the studio of E. Bieber. Bieber had two locations in Germany; Berlin and Hamburg. Emilie Bieber was a female German photographer who ran her Hamburg studio from 1852 through 1872 when she was joined by her nephew, Leonard Berlin-Bieber. Emilie Bieber died in 1884.  The beautiful woman in this image is dressed to the hilt. Her dress and hat are covered with flowers and feathers. Perhaps she is an actress which judging by her expression, pose, and dress; is a likely possibility.  This photograph is not  a standard sized cabinet card but instead is known as a Boudoir Card. Kaiser Wilhelm II: The Last German Emperor and King of Prussia

Wilhelm II (1859-1941) was the son of Crown Prince Frederick of Prussia and Victoria, daughter of Queen Victoria of England. He served a period of military service. In 1888 his father succeeded as Frederick III. He died shortly after and Wilhelm became Kaiser at age 29.  Within two years he forced the resignation of Otto von Bismarck. He greatly increased the strength of the German armed forces. Following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914, he greatly encouraged the Austrians against Serbia. This helped trigger World War I. When the war began he was excluded from military decisions by military commanders. In 1918 the German military collapsed. Kaiser Wilhem was forced to abdicate and went into exile in the Netherlands. This Cabinet Card portrait was photographed by G. Hansen of Hamburg, Germany.
