THE INTENSE GAZE OF NELLIE HUTCHINS IN MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT

This Cabinet Card is the image of Nellie Hutchins and she is photographed by Appelquest of Middletown, Connecticut. Nellie has great eyes. Her staring eyes speak paragraphs. What do her expressive eyes say to you? Your comments are appreciated.

  1. Her eyes show a bit of sadness and uncertainty…I was just sent a picture of my grandmother yesterday via e-mail…it appears that her picture was also taken by Appelquest many, many years ago. I would like to learn more about Appelquest…can you please fill me in? Do they even exist anymore? I live in Portland, Ct.

    • Janet Green, what a surprise! I have been researching my great grandfather Gideon Appelquest who owned the Appelquest photography studio in Middletown, CT. My wife and I visited the city this summer and found some family and business information. After Gideon died in 1902 my great grandmother Emily ran the business for two years. She moved to Syracuse NY and we do not know what happened to the business. The original building still stands on the corner of Main St. and Rappalo, 572 Main, along with the building next door which was acquired. The family correspondence indicates that Gideon’s work was held in high esteem.
