A pretty young woman with dark hair and dark eyes poses for her portrait by a photographer named E. C. Brown whose studio was located on Douglas Avenue in Ellsworth, Kansas.  The woman in this photograph is wearing a striking dress with a couple of floral displays pinned to it. She is wearing formal white gloves and is holding some papers.  Her dress looks like a wedding dress but it is not likely that she would be holding papers in a wedding portrait. Perhaps a visitor to the Cabinet Card Gallery will share an opinion in regard to the specific context of this image.

  1. My first hit is that it is a graduation photo. Many girls in that era had lovely white dresses for their graduation ceremonies and photos.

  2. This is my grandmother Anna Bell Cadwell. She was a teacher in the area before she married my grandfather. How did you get this picture?

    • I am happy that you found this portrait of your grandmother on the cabinet card gallery site. There have been several other visitors that have found images of relatives. In addition, a number of people have found photographs taken by their relatives. One of the many rewards I experience writing this blog is helping people make these connections with their ancestors. In regard to your question, I do not know where I purchased the cabinet card portrait of Anna Bell Cadwell. I really need to keep better track of the origin of each of the photographs in the gallery. I am sorry that I can not answer your question.
