YOUNG BOY GIVES SISTER A RIDE ON THE BACK OF HIS TRICYCLE : WATERTOWN, WISCONSIN

This cabinet card image features an adorably dressed little boy giving his little sister a ride on the back of his tricycle. Note the children’s hats and the boy’s high top shoes. There is a wonderful view of the antique trike. John B. May, an Englishman, is the photographer of this portrait. The Wisconsin Photographer’s Index falsely reports that he operated a studio in Watertown (Wisconsin) between 1879 and 1899. In fact, according to his obituary, May ended his photography career in 1891.  After his leaving the business, he supervised the telephone Exchange. He later moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was brought back to Watertown for burial in 1899. (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF AN ATTRACTIVE WOMAN IN WATERTOWN, NEW YORK

A pretty young woman poses for her portrait in this cabinet card photograph taken by Jacob C. Banta of Watertown, New York. The woman is wearing her hair up and a serious expression as she stands by an open ornate gate. Mr Banta can be found in the 1880 US census. He was born around 1832 and lived with his wife Sarah and 21 year-old daughter Lillie in Watertown. At the time of the census he was working as a photographer and local business directories indicate that he kept that employment until at least 1891. This cabinet card portrait is in very good condition (see scans).

STREETER, BRIMMER, AND OLEAN : CLOTHING STORE : WATERTOWN : BULLDOG (TRADE CARD)

This Victorian Trade Card is advertising the Grand Central clothing company operated by Streeter, Brimmer & Olean. The company sold both ready made and custom menswear. The business was located in Watertown, New York and had existed there since 1823. It is commonly said and written that many dog owners look amazingly like their dogs. This trade card humorously gives an example by showing a dog owner that closely resembles his bulldog. The card measures about 3 1/4″ x 5 1/8″.  (SOLD)

Dapper Black Gentleman in Watertown, Wisconsin

This Cabinet card is a photograph of a dapper young Black man posing in  Donner Brothers Studio in Watertown, Wisconsin. Watertown is located in southeastern Wisconsin and was settled in 1836. Around the time of this photograph, there was an influx of German immigrants into the town. These immigrants  started the first kindergarten in the United States soon after their arrival in Watertown.
